Medeski Martin And Wood Combustication on 2LP

"Wide open," that’s the phrase John Medeski uses to describe his bandmates’ musical sensibilities, the attitude he seeks in himself, and the spirit of musical adventure that Medeski Martin & Wood have pursued for over two decades. The trio’s amalgam of jazz, funk, “avant-noise” and a million other musical currents and impulses is nearly impossible to classify, which is just how they like it. Medeski’s keyboard excursions, Chris Wood’s hard-charging bass lines and Billy Martin’s supple, danceable beats have come to resemble a single organism, moving gracefully between genre-defying compositions and expansive improvisation atop a relentless groove.

A deeper groove, plus turntables and powerful experimentation guided MMW through their first Blue Note release - 1998's funked-out Combustication. The hard hitting "Sugar Craft" featuring DJ Logic is exciting, edgy, and danceable. "Nocturne" seems to float through a dark, and strangely comfortable dreamscape. "Latin Shuffle" features one of the greatest recorded piano solos by Medeski. Rounding out the album and adding an insightful voice is poet Steve Cannon on "Whatever Happened to Gus." Recorded at The Magic Shop in New York City, MMW even enlisted the talents of two radically different engineers (David Baker and Scott Harding) for Combustication to create complementary sonic approaches.
